The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged the Mahama administration to move beyond what he described as slogans and rhetoric and focus on tangible job creation and national development.
Speaking at the Young Commons Forum at the University of Cape Coast on Saturday, February 21, the Effutu MP said that one year into its tenure, the government had failed to deliver on key flagship initiatives it promised, including the Women’s Bank and the 24-Hour Economy policy.
For the past year, we have seen a government that believes in rhetoric, talks more than it works. It promised the people of Ghana one job with three shifts, and called it a 24-hour economy.
“It promised a women’s development bank, and it also promised to increase the price of cocoa to GH¢6,000,” he stated.
Afenyo-Markin argued that unemployment remains a major concern and accused the government of not implementing its own policies.
“Today, the unemployment rate is on the rise. Today, this government has failed to implement its own flagship initiatives,” he said.
He further claimed that instead of rolling out the 24-Hour Economy as promised, the administration had created additional layers of bureaucracy.
“It has rather created a bureaucracy for its 24-hour economy. In our minds as a minority, the 24-hour economy is more of a slogan than a policy. The women’s bank has also not seen the light of day. While the government talks about inflation levels going down, the average Ghanaian is going through crisis,” Afenyo-Markin added.
The Minority Leader maintained that Ghanaians are more interested in practical results that improve livelihoods than in political messaging.
