Accra, June 17, 2025 — The ABSA Black Star Marathon Team led by Mr. Cyril Nai paid a courtesy call on the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
As part of the visit, the team presented a customised frame to Mr. Ampofo Ankrah. The frame was both a congratulatory token of his appointment and a formal gesture inviting him to participate in the event scheduled for July 26, 2025, at the Black Star Square in Accra.
During the meeting, the team shared their vision and outlined a five-year commitment to support the Black Star Marathon. They explained that the initiative is designed to promote sports tourism, encourage mass participation and position Ghana on the global athletics calendar.
They also highlighted the marathon’s inclusive approach, which will welcome both able-bodied athletes and para-athletes, demonstrating the beauty of diversity and inclusion.
The marathon also aims to raise awareness and funds for key social causes, including support for individuals living with kidney disease and other health conditions.
Mr. Ampofo Ankrah welcomed the team warmly and expressed appreciation for the visit and the thoughtful presentation.
He described the marathon as a meaningful initiative and assured the team of the NSA’s full backing.
“We are ready and willing to support this initiative. Just let us know exactly what you need so the countdown can begin,” he said. He also commended the group for its long-term commitment and agreed to assist in ministerial engagement and broader stakeholder support as requested by the team.
The ABSA Black Star Marathon team expressed optimism that this year’s edition will see a Ghanaian champion emerge, following last year’s win by a Kenyan athlete. They are working towards attracting elite participants from Ghana and beyond to raise the profile of the event internationally.
The team also requested Mr. Ankrah’s presence at both the opening and closing ceremonies of the marathon.
With strong institutional backing and corporate commitment, the Black Star Marathon is poised to become a landmark fixture on Ghana’s sporting calendar.
Also present were Pamela Boateng, Semiu Ayirde, Francis Nettey, Nana Fynn Uass-Peters, and Richard Doe.
