Accra 2023: Addressing the Equipment Row – George Tettey Explores the Cost of Purchasing Protective Stockings for Athletes

The 2023 African Games have encountered numerous challenges, primarily centered around the provision of adequate equipment for athletes.

Ghanaian athletes have expressed dissatisfaction with the situation, with Ghana Beach Volleyball player Seidu Adjanaku also voicing concerns about the absence of protective socks for competition.

Nevertheless, the Ghana Volleyball Association, in a released statement, has disassociated itself from Adjanaku’s remarks regarding the equipment shortage.

Adjanaku raised the complaint following Ghana’s defeat to Morocco in two consecutive sets during the quarterfinals of the Men’s Beach Volleyball event at the Laboma Beach. Notably, Adjanaku had sustained a toe injury in the preceding match against Algeria.

In an exclusive interview with Citi Sports, Ghana Volleyball Association President George Tettey doubled down on this stance saying,

“All the matches we were winning, none of them had they won the protective stockings. We gave a list of items we needed for the competition, we did not request for protective stockings. If they (the players) needed it, they would have told us as a board.”

“What does it take to buy protective stockings? It would be very unfair for us to condemn the government for not providing stockings…as if we are being ungrateful to all the efforts being done.”

Morocco clinched the gold medal by defeating South Africa in the final. Botswana secured the bronze medal by defeating Sierra Leone. In the Women’s Division, Egypt, Mozambique, and Nigeria secured the first, second, and third positions respectively.
