Accra 2023: South Africa Pulls Out of Hockey Competition Due to Substandard Pitch

Citi Sports has learned that South Africa has withdrawn from participating in the hockey competition of the 13th African Games.

According to the South African contingent, this decision is attributed to the substandard pitch at Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium, which was laid only a few days before the start of the competition.

Team South Africa allegedly expressed discomfort with the pitch, especially for its athletes bound for the 2024 Olympics. Additionally, the contingent reportedly voiced dissatisfaction with the overall organization of the hockey competition.

The Hockey Federation has declined several opportunities to comment on the matter, instead redirecting inquiries to the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for an official statement regarding the reasons behind South Africa’s withdrawal.

Earlier today, Egypt secured a 5-4 victory against Nigeria in the Men’s Competition, while Ghana is scheduled to compete against Nigeria in the Women’s Division at 2 pm.

Ghana aims to increase its medal tally at the African Games, which it is hosting for the first time. The multi-sport event is expected to conclude on March 23.
