On Friday, March 8, 2024, President George William Vella of Malta, accompanied by the First Lady, Miriam Vella, made a courtesy visit to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at Jubilee House, the official seat of government. This visit was a key component of President Vella’s 2-day State Visit to Ghana.
President Akufo-Addo characterized the visit as significant for him, marking the second occasion when a sitting President from the Republic of Malta has undertaken a State Visit to Ghana. The first such visit occurred in July 2017 with Her Excellency Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, who was then the President of Malta.
“I say landmark because both of these visits have occurred during the presidency of Nana Akufo-Addo,” he wrote on his Facebook page.
He additionally mentioned that the ministerial teams of both our nations engaged in discussions primarily focused on reinforcing the already warm relations between our countries. The aim was to explore additional areas of cooperation for the mutual benefit of our respective populations.
“Our discussions centered on the improvement in the volumes of trade between Ghana and Malta, mutual support for candidates from our two countries vying for positions with international organisations, issues of migration, the reform of global governance institutions, and the deepening of political consultations on matters of mutual interest to the two countries, amongst others,” he said.
