Dr. Asah Asante, a senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana – Legon, has dismissed accusations against President Akufo-Addo for appointing political figures to lead state-owned institutions as baseless.
These accusations arise from public concerns over the President’s recent appointments of political personalities to key state institutions. President Akufo-Addo has appointed Mr. Tweneboah Kodua Fokuo as the Managing Director of the National Investment Bank (NIB).
Additionally, the President has appointed former Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Joseph Kpemka, as the Deputy Managing Director of the Bulk Energy Storage and Transportation Limited Company (BOST).
The Minority in Parliament has opposed the appointment of Mr. Tweneboah Kodua Fokuo, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Manso Nkwanta, as the new Managing Director of NIB.
In a statement, National Democratic Congress lawmakers expressed serious concerns about the politicization of state-owned enterprises, condemning the rationale behind the appointments and calling for all well-meaning Ghanaians to do the same.
However, speaking on the Morning Starr with Francis Abban on Monday, political science lecturer Dr. Asah Asante stated that the criticisms directed at the President and the appointees are unfair.
“Mr. Fokuo has been deputy director and being a deputy he is still a political actor and nobody has raised a figure, why are people raising figures now? So for me, there is something wrong with the public view about it. Because if the man has not broken any law and there is nobody has come out that there is this law that prevents the man from being in that office, I mean all will be much ado about nothing.
“It is just mere noise. If look at all the things that they have talked about if there is a law that such appointments seek to breach people will not hesitate to go to court immediately. Why are they delaying going to court? It tells you there is nothing in there, from the logical deductions I realized there is nothing in there to pin it against them,” Dr. Asah stated.
He added that those dissatisfied with the President’s appointments should take their grievances to court if they have any legitimate legal reasons.
