Former President John Mahama has criticized President Akufo-Addo for what he calls self-glorification following the unveiling of a statue of himself in the Western Region.
Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), expressed that President Akufo-Addo should show humility and allow others to acknowledge his achievements instead of seeking personal recognition.
The comments came after President Akufo-Addo unveiled the statue at the entrance of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi on November 6, during his one-day “thank you” tour of the Western Region.
Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, the Regional Minister, explained that the statue was meant to honor the President’s development initiatives throughout his time in office.
In response to the unveiling, Mr. Mahama emphasized that leaders should prioritize serving the people rather than seeking personal accolades.
“He went to Takoradi recently and unveiled a statue of himself. How is this possible,” Mr Mahama questioned.
“Every president must have humility. People should be the ones praising you and honouring you. You are not supposed to craft your own statue, unveil it, and ask the people to clap for you.”
The former President also criticized President Akufo-Addo for receiving honorary degrees while fulfilling his duties as president.
“You go to every university across the country and ask them to give you a doctorate while you are still a sitting president,” suggesting that he should have waited until his term ended before seeking recognition.
Mr Mahama said; “He should have even waited until his tenure was over so that when people look at your work, they could say, ‘You did very well, and we want to honour you.’”
“But instead, he has squeezed the hands of all universities in the country and forced them to give him a doctorate,” the NDC flagbearer asserted.
