Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu Resigns as Majority Leader; Afenyo-Markin Takes the Helm

The Majority Leader and Member of Parliament representing the Suame constituency in the Ashanti region, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has officially stepped down from his position as the leader of the majority caucus in Parliament.

Sources from within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) hierarchy, as reported by Myjoyonline, indicate that he voluntarily tendered his resignation during a meeting of the NPP caucus in Parliament, attended by the Executive, including President Akufo-Addo.

The role of leadership will now be taken up by the Deputy Majority Leader and MP for Efutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

This development comes in the wake of brief tensions between the caucus and the executive, triggered by reports indicating potential changes in the leadership of the majority caucus.

The unfolding situation sparked objections from First Deputy Speaker, Joe Osei-Owusu, and other members, expressing their determination to oppose any alterations in their ranks imposed by the party. They emphasized their contentment with the current leadership under Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, also weighed in, emphasizing that parties with representation in Parliament hold significant influence in appointing the leadership of their respective caucuses.

“If as a new House, you barely even know each other, and then you are asked to go and appoint your leader without your party, how are you going to do it?

“A party that has given you the platform to come to this House. You come on the ticket of the party and to appoint your leader, the party must lead that process. I don’t know how you can do it without the party, “ he insisted.

Meanwhile, the National Council of the NPP is scheduled to receive a briefing on the matter during its meeting on Friday.
