The Dean of the University of Cape Coast Business School, Professor John Gatsi, asserts that the responsibility for the escalating unemployment in the country lies with the government and not the universities. He emphasizes that universities fulfill their role by providing rigorous training for students to become employable and entrepreneurial. However, the stagnant growth rate of the economy fails to foster a conducive environment for job creation and business establishment
Speaking to Joy Business on the sidelines of the partnership between PMI-Ghana and UCC Business School in Cape Coast, Professor Gatsi pointed out that the country’s growth rate over the years has come with little job creation
“The growth in the economy has been described as a jobless growth. The growth is not responsive to the need for employment of people. That’s beyond the university. The university is tasked to equip people and get them fit for the job market”, he said.
The President of the Project Management Institute, Frank Owusu Asamoah, contends that there are plentiful job opportunities. However, he asserts that job seekers find it challenging to seize these opportunities because they lack intentionality in approaching their professions.
“The fact that there is unemployment does not mean there are no job opportunities. Project management trains people to develop their own ideas into viable businesses.”
Mr. Asamoah encourages the youth to join organized institutions or associations for increased leverage in the job market. PMI Ghana primarily aims to instill a sense of professionalism, emphasizing the importance of respecting and adhering to the professional code of ethics.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with the UCC Business School will primarily concentrate on providing mentorship, guidance, and facilitating student introductions to industries.
