Chamber of Mines Unveils Competency Framework for Mining Industry

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has introduced the Ghana Mining Competency Framework to standardize the definition and assessment of the knowledge and skills required for various roles within the mining sector.

This framework aims to help mining companies ensure their workforce is properly trained and qualified to perform their tasks safely and efficiently.

The launch occurred during the 6th Human Resource Biennial Conference in Accra.

Mr. Sulemanu Koney, Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber, expressed gratitude to the HR Committee and the Ad-hoc Committee members for their significant contributions to developing the framework.

Mr. Koney stated that “the framework will serve as a foundation for designing training programs, assessments, and career development pathways, all aimed at enhancing the overall competency of employees in the mining industry.”

He urged Human Resources professionals in the industry “to continue implementing initiatives and programs that meet the evolving needs of the mining sector.”

The conference gathered industry leaders to address the challenges and opportunities within the mining sector.

It included presentations and panel discussions covering a range of topics, such as the future of work in mining, diversity and inclusion, and the role of technology in advancing sustainability.

Industry leaders and experts shared their insights and experiences, highlighting the need for collaboration and innovation to tackle the sector’s challenges and ensure a sustainable future.

Mr. Koney emphasized the crucial role of HR practitioners in advancing sustainability initiatives within the mining industry.

“As the industry continues to evolve, it is clear that HR professionals will continue to play a crucial role in shaping its future”, he said.

The Ghana Chamber of Mines is the primary industry association for mining in Ghana.

It represents the collective interests of companies engaged in mineral exploration, production, and processing throughout the country.

Member companies account for over 60 percent of Ghana’s mineral output.

The Chamber has been advocating for the industry’s interests since 1928.
