Deputy IGP Appointment: “I See a Grand Conspiracy Ahead of 2024 Election”, says Ablakwa

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has alleged that the appointment of COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations is a strategic maneuver by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in preparation for the 2024 election.

He noted that the Police Council, which made this decision and is chaired by the Vice President—who is also a candidate in the presidential race—suggests that this move is unlikely to be a mere coincidence at this time.

President Akufo-Addo has appointed Commissioner of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations.

The presidency stated that this appointment followed the Police Council’s advice, which highlighted COP Yohuno’s exceptional credentials and dedication. However, the timing of this decision has sparked public concern with less than six months remaining before the national election.

Additionally, the appointment comes shortly after the special parliamentary committee released its report on the alleged plot to remove the current IGP, George Akufo-Addo Dampare. This has led some to speculate that the move could be part of a scheme to oust the IGP before the elections.

Speaking in an interview, Mr Ablakwa stated that “the statement from the president or the Director of Communication, says this is based on the advice of the Police Counsel, which is chaired by Vice President Bawumia. I see a grand conspiracy ahead of the 2024 elections.”

Mr. Ablakwa pointed to alleged tactics in Parliament, including Chairman Atta Akyea’s refusal to sign the report and attempts to redo the committee’s work.

“When you look at the conspiracy, people are just looking at the elections. Let’s bring in somebody we can trust, and all these things started in Assin North [By-election]. They think the IGP didn’t do enough.”
