Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in the Ashanti region have commenced strike action over issues of accommodation.
This development follows the implementation of an eviction notice affecting over 20 senior specialists and consultants who have vacated the Danyame residential area.
In 2022, the government allocated around 400 acres of government lands in the Ridge Nhyeaso and Danyame areas of Kumasi to the Kumasi Traditional Council, acting as custodians of the land initially acquired by colonial masters.
At present, doctors are not addressing new cases due to an ongoing strike.
The strike is a response to the eviction of over 20 senior specialists and consultants from the Danyame residential area.
Kwame Frimpong, the Public Relations Officer of KATH, elaborated in an interview with Starr News that the strike aims to prompt a resolution to the accommodation issues faced by the doctors.
“After the doctors informed management about issues concerning their accommodation, we have spoken to the Regional Coordinating Council, Lands Commission, and Danyame Redevelopment Committee. The assurance is that no doctor will be evicted without being given accommodation elsewhere.
“Some of the doctors complained that the redevelopers had cut their water and electricity supply, and the Regional Ministers and the Lands Commission have assured them they would deal with any redeveloper who will cause inconvenience for the doctors,” Mr. Frimpong narrated.
He continued: ”We’ve told the doctors that given the assurance we’ve been given by the Regional Coordinating Council and the Lands Commission, it is important that they rescind their decision to strike. They have indicated that they will for the time being continue to take care of patients on admission while further engaging with their leadership.
“The Hospital Management will this afternoon hold a meeting with the RCC, Lands Commission, Danyame Redevelopment Council, and the Doctors and we’re sure the issues will be resolved for doctors to resume full work.”
