The Eastern Regional Fire Command has issued a strong warning to groups and individuals who habitually attack firefighters in the line of duty to cease such reprehensible acts.
This stern message follows an incident where fire personnel dispatched to a fire scene at Nsawam Adoagyiri were assaulted by youth groups from the area. The attackers hurled stones at the firefighting team, resulting in damage to the windshield of the fire engine.
According to sources, the attack stemmed from the misunderstanding that the personnel were from the regional command, sent to provide assistance due to the decommissioning of the Nsawam fire engine.
The angry youth, unaware of the circumstances, took matters into their own hands, pelting the team with stones and other objects, leading to injuries among the officers aboard the fire engine.
In recent months, there have been numerous incidents of attacks on fire personnel in the region, often occurring when they arrive late at scenes due to factors beyond their control.
Instances of fire engines and equipment being damaged have also been reported, a situation that the command strongly condemns.
Eastern Regional Fire Service Commander, ACFO Jennifer Naa Yarley Quaye, emphasized in an interview the importance of thorough investigation by the Ghana Police Service into these incidents. She stressed the necessity for all perpetrators to face full prosecution under the law, serving as a deterrent to others.
