The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has called on all Ghanaians to exercise restraint and adhere to the law as the December 7 general elections approach.
In a statement reaffirming their commitment to maintaining peace throughout the election period, the police emphasized that while they aim to avoid making arrests, they will enforce the law if necessary to ensure order.
During a recent meeting with executives from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ayawaso East and Ayawaso North constituencies, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Arhin Kwasi Annor, the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, appealed to political leaders to act responsibly and encourage their supporters to abide by legal standards, highlighting the importance of peace for a smooth election.
DCOP Annor clarified that the police take no pleasure in making arrests and aimed to dispel any perceptions of bias in law enforcement actions. The meeting with NPP and NDC leaders is part of a broader police initiative to foster cooperation with political stakeholders in the lead-up to election day.
He urged party leaders to use their influence to promote respect for the law among their members, emphasizing that a peaceful election benefits not only political parties but the nation as a whole.
“But then if you decide to do otherwise, that is where the problem will come. And we sitting here, nobody takes delight in punishing people. Nobody can just arrest you when you have not committed any offence. So please, let us comport ourselves. Let’s respect the laws of the country. Let’s act within the confines of the laws of the country.”
