Establish a scholarship scheme so more pharmacists can specialize – Pharmaceutical Society tells Bawumia

The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana has appealed to the government to establish a scholarship scheme to enable more individuals to pursue specialization in the field.

Dr. Samuel Donkor, the President of the Society, highlighted that while there is an institution for specialization, many individuals struggle to finance their education, resulting in a shortage of specialists within the Society.

“We need specialists in pharmacy. We have oncologist specialists in pharmacy, we have cardiovascular training specialists, and in a whole lot of fields. The government has established Ghana College, yet our pharmacists going to Ghana College are not being sponsored and that is on our agenda – human resource empowerment.

“Please look into it and let us get the sponsorship for pharmacists to be able to go to college for specialization,” he said.

He made these remarks during a stakeholder engagement with the Pharmaceutical Society on April 4, attended by Vice President and New Patriotic Party flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In response, the Vice President pledged to elevate the pharmaceutical industry to become the best in the sub-region. He also assured that efforts will be directed towards enhancing infrastructure for training pharmacy students, akin to the support provided for the construction of the hostel at Trinity Theological Seminary through the GETFund.

“We are also doing that even for Kayaye. Yes, we have skilled training centres that I would be commissioning next to train Kayaye. We build these things.

“So why can’t we build a major pharmaceutical training center for our pharmacists who would deliver the goods to us? So, I fully agree to this,” he added.
