The Government of Ghana has announced the immediate evacuation of students from conflict-ridden areas including Bawku, Nalerigu, and surrounding communities. This decision follows renewed violence in the Bawku area, resulting in the tragic deaths of two students and widespread fear among residents.
A statement released by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President’s spokesperson, on Sunday, July 27, 2025, emphasized that the newly imposed curfew—from 2:00 PM to 6:00 AM—is not only aimed at restoring calm but also to create safe conditions for evacuating students in affected schools.
This announcement comes in the wake of deadly attacks, including an incident on Saturday, July 26, where two students at Nalerigu SHS were fatally shot by unidentified gunmen. The government has responded swiftly, deploying the Ghana Armed Forces, transitioning from peacekeeping to peace enforcement, to protect lives and prevent further escalation.
The Ministry of the Interior confirmed that the curfew is effective immediately and will continue until further notice. The situation marks a significant security concern, as schools have become unintended targets in the chieftaincy conflict that has long plagued the area.
Government officials stress that the evacuation is a protective measure, not a sign of surrender. “We assure the public that the Armed Forces will take every necessary step to maintain law and order,” said Kwakye Ofosu.
The public has been urged to cooperate with security forces and report suspicious activities as peace and stability remain the government’s top priorities.
