“Okyihene Release Our Lands For Us”-Asuaba Residents

Residents and farmers in Asuaba , a suburb of the Eastern Region, have voiced their discontent over the reported forced seizure of lands by Okyehene and his alleged criminal associates.

In response to this, a delegation identifying themselves as subjects of Okyehene, Asamankesehene, and Adeisohene in 2023 unexpectedly arrived in their communities armed with weapons to assert their claim over the mentioned lands.

During a press conference today, Nana Yaa Fiankobea, the spokesperson for the aggrieved farmers, stated that the invasion has resulted in the destruction of crops on their farms.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the Press, we are dressed in red and black clothes this morning not because one is bereaved or mourning but rather the plain disregard of rule of law and by-force seizure of our lands through intimidation by the Okyihene and his criminal elements.” she stated

“It will interest you to know that, as we speak the Okyihene and his criminal gang led by one ex- convict Nana Baah Akansira popularly known as Haruna for illegally graded and destroyed more than 6,000 acres of farm lands ranging from palm plantations, coconut plantations, pawpaw plantations,cola-nut plantations, cassava farms, coco yam and cocoa farms. The rest are maize farms, orange farms, sugar cane farms, yam farms and many other farms lands without any prior notice all in the name the land belong to him (Okyihene).” she added.

Meanwhile, Nana Yaa highlighted the futile efforts of the Police upon receiving reports of the incident at the police station. She urged the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Ekuffo Dampare, to take action and ensure order among his personnel, emphasizing the importance of restoring peace.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the Press, one aspect of the whole debacle is the facts that farmers whose farm lands have been graded and destroyed cannot obtain Justice as complaints end up in police cells for reporting these criminal elements activities.

On many occasions, the Lower Akyem West District Police Commander at Adeiso, Chief Baffour Awuah, plainly told us that there is nothing he can do to help us ie either we go to court or run to the Okyihene for peace to prevail.

It is quite strange in this situation is that when these helpless farmers runs to the police at Adeiso to make complaints about the distraction, they are rather arrested, handcuffed, put behind bars while some are currently facing trials for reporting the issue.”

In a interview with Ebenezer Junior Arthur from Accra Live, the distressed farmers expressed their discontent regarding the confiscation of their lands and the devastation of their crops. They appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the government, urging them to intervene and provide assistance.

“We organized this demonstration to protect our ancestral lands, which have been in our family for generations. Our great-grandfathers purchased this land from Okyihene about 400 years ago, and now we are facing the distressing situation of waking up to find our farms ravaged by unknown excavators. Approximately 300 acres of land, where vital crops like Orange, Cocoa, Palm trees, and coconuts are grown, have been destroyed without any prior notice. Despite reporting the incident to Okyihene and the Police, with Okyihene denying involvement, we have received no resolution. We urgently call on the government to intervene and address this issue, which not only affects our livelihoods but also impacts the broader community.”

Simultaneously, the Opposition National Democratic Congress’s Parliamentary Candidate, Hon. Drah Emmanuel of Upper West Akyim, called upon the Okyihene, the incumbent MP, and the MDCE to take proactive measures and restore order. He emphasized the need for peace and urged the release of confiscated lands to their rightful owners, emphasizing the historical inheritance of these lands from their ancestors.
