Ghana Youth Manifesto Coalition commends gov’t for establishment of Youth Development & Empowerment Ministry

The Ghana Youth Manifesto (GYM) Coalition has lauded the new government led by President John Mahama for the establishment of the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment by Executive Instrument on 9th January 2025, under Section 11(3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (PNDCL 327).

In a statement, the Coalition indicated that the move by President John Mahama is in fulfillment of one of the crucial campaign promises of the National Democratic Party to the Youth of Ghana.

The call for an independent Youth Ministry has been ongoing for decades and we are excited to finally witness its creation under this regime.

“We deem this as a bold step that underscores his resolve to champion youth-related development. This will be a good starting point for the Government in tackling the soaring rate of youth unemployment head-on and creating avenues for youth empowerment.

“The creation of the ministry aligns with policy recommendations advanced by the Ghana Youth Manifesto (GYM) Coalition as part of efforts to influence political party manifestos, prior to the 2024 General Elections – advocacy that can be traced back to 2010.  The move further aligns with national and international policy frameworks such as the National Youth Authority Act, 2016, Act 939; National Youth Policy (2022-2032), and the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2250, aimed at advocating the key role of youth as agents of development.”
