Government Plans to Consolidate Hydro Dams Under New Ghana Hydro Authority

The government is proposing to consolidate all hydroelectric dams into a unified organization, to be named the Ghana Hydro Authority.

This plan is detailed in a bill now under consideration in Parliament, which will be implemented if approved.

At yesterday’s emergency Parliamentary session, Deputy Minority Whip Ahmed Ibrahim voiced concerns during the bill’s first reading.

The Banda MP has reported significant concerns among traditional leaders in his constituency regarding the impact of this merger on the Bui Power Authority (BPA).

The proposed consolidation involves more than just hydroelectric dams, encompassing additional assets as well.

Other bills being advanced by the Energy Ministry include the Ghana Thermal Authority Bill, Ghana Hydro Authority Bill, Ghana Power Distribution Authority Bill, Ghana Nuclear Power Corporation Bill, and Ghana Energy Regulatory Authority Bill.

Deputy Minority Whip Ahmed Ibrahim raised concerns about the timing of these proposals, given that the general election is less than 100 days away.

Speaker Alban Bagbin, after consulting with the clerks, noted that no physical copies of the explanatory memoranda for the listed bills were available. Consequently, he announced that the bills would not be considered today.
