GRNMA suspends intended Strike over increment in verification Fee

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association has decided to suspend its planned nationwide strike in response to the increase in verification fees for nurses and midwives from ¢550 to ¢3000.

Earlier this month, the National Nurses and Midwifery Council approved the hike in verification fees for nurses and midwives seeking licenses, aiming to address the emigration of nurses and midwives from the country.

This decision sparked outrage among registered nurses and midwives, who threatened to stage a nationwide strike to protest against the increase.

However, the Nurses and Midwifery Council released a statement yesterday announcing the suspension of the fee increment’s implementation, pending further review and consultation.

Following the Nursing and Midwifery Councill suspension of the fee increment, the Registered Nurses and Midwives Association has also suspended their decision to embark on strike.

Addressing the media, President of the Association, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo said it has also halted its actions in protest against the fee increment.

“In view of this decision by the NMC board, the National Council of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association at its sitting today, 27th May 2024 has equally decided to halt its roadmap of action in protest against the increased verification fees,” she said.

She noted that the association is engaging with stakeholders to ensure fair adjustment in the verification fees.

“We wish to assure all nurses and midwives that the leadership of the GRNMA will continue to engage and work with the interested parties to ensure that the new verification fee is fair and acceptable to the nursing and midwifery fraternity,” she added.
