
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Commonwealth leaders following her appointment as the new Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
The announcement was made during the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2024) in Apia, Samoa, on Friday, October 25.
In a post on her X (formerly Twitter) account shortly after her appointment was confirmed, Ayorkor Botchwey conveyed her appreciation and commitment to her new role.
She acknowledged the significant responsibilities that lie ahead and pledged to guide the Commonwealth toward enhanced inclusivity and collective progress.
“I’m honoured and humbled by the trust of Commonwealth leaders. A lot of work lies ahead. But together, we shall work for a New Commonwealth that works for all its citizens,” the new Secretary-General wrote.

As she succeeds Patricia Scotland, Baroness Scotland of the United Kingdom, Ayorkor Botchwey has committed to championing the core objectives of the Commonwealth, which include strengthening democracy, advocating for human rights, and promoting sustainable development among its member states.

Ayorkor Botchwey’s predecessor also warmly passed the baton to her on her X handle, extending her best wishes for success in her new role.

Ayorkor Botchwey’s selection has received widespread commendation from both Ghanaian and international communities, making her the second Ghanaian to hold the position since the Commonwealth Secretariat was established.
