The Ghana Police Service has detained an individual in connection with the shooting incident involving a military officer in Kasoa, situated in the Central Region.
The military officer, reportedly in his late 30s, tragically lost his life due to gunshot wounds, while two other officers accompanying him escaped unharmed.
As per a police statement, initial inquiries suggest that the suspect, identified as Benlord Ababio, allegedly perpetrated the shooting at Millennium City in Kasoa on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, around 4:20 pm.
The victim sustained severe injuries from the gunfire and was swiftly transported to the Mother and Child Hospital in Kasoa for urgent medical treatment. Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, he was later pronounced dead by attending healthcare professionals.
“Suspect Benlord Ababio is currently in custody assisting Police investigation.
“The leadership of the Police Service is in touch with the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces as investigation into the incident continues,” the police statement read.
Until his demise on April 30, the deceased military officer was accompanied by two colleagues, endeavoring to resolve a dispute. They had previously filed a complaint at the Millennium City District Police Command.
Driving a Toyota Rav 4 with registration number GR 3591-24, the officers arrived at the disputed land and encountered individuals working there. While attempting to file another complaint at the Millennium City District Police station, they encountered resistance from Benlord Ababio, the Gyasehene of Millennium City, who urged them not to proceed.
Upon disregarding his plea and deciding to head to the Divisional command due to the lack of progress at the District command, the officers’ vehicle was fired upon from behind by Ababio, resulting in the death of one officer.
