Former Cuban amateur star Andy Cruz made the third appearance of his professional career last weekend in Orlando, Florida, defeating Brayan Zamarripa over 10 rounds.
Cruz is now 3-0 (1 KO) and has looked impressive since turning over following his successes at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games, where he won the gold medal.
Cruz, who competes at lightweight, has not been short of plaudits and has proved that, despite his lack of pro experience, he is emerging as a contender at 135 pounds.
Promoter Eddie Hearn has proposed a rematch between Cruz and Keyshawn Davis, who Cruz defeated to claim Olympic gold in Tokyo.
Davis has made an equally impressive start to professional life, unbeaten in 11 fights (7 KOs, 1 NC), having defeated Jose Pedraza on February 8 in six rounds.
The Olympic silver medalist was an interested observer as Cruz notched his third victory and took to social media to question Cruz and Hearn’s motives behind calling him out, despite the boxers being signed to different promotional companies.
“I’m still trying to figure out,” wrote Davis, on X. “Number one, I’m still waiting on this contract. I’m going to put that out there.”
“I’m trying to figure out how the [2020 Olympic] gold medalist [Cruz] is chasing after the silver medalist. Make it make sense. Why is the gold medalist chasing after the silver medalist? What is going on here?” Keyshawn continued.
“Tell me why is the gold medalist. You already beat me four times in the amateurs and all that s***. Why are you chasing after someone you beat four times already? Make it make sense.
“Never in boxing history has a gold medalist chased after a silver medalist. Oh man, that’s all I got to say,” Davis concluded on X, before deleting the posts.
