Mallam-Kasoa flood: We’re working to find solutions – Weija-Gbawe Assembly

The Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly has revealed that it is currently constructing storm drains to mitigate the frequent traffic congestions experienced on the Mallam-Weija Highway during rainfall.

Speaking to Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, the Municipal Engineer, Dr. Daniel Sowah, clarified that reports suggesting the involvement of sand winners in exacerbating the situation are inaccurate. He attributed the worsening conditions to erosion, which carries sediments from the Broadcasting area down to the SCC and Old Barrier areas.

Dr. Sowah mentioned that the matter has been brought to the attention of the Greater Accra Regional Minister designate, Daniel Nii Kwatei Titus Glover, who has proposed a roundtable discussion to explore potential solutions to the issue.

“It is an issue that we are working to find solutions to it and the Regional Minister designate invited us to come and have a roundtable discussion on finding solutions to the challenge

“The stream that discharges water around that area, we realised that this is a stream that starts from the Broadcasting area and carries water from the upstream all the way to the SCC and Old Barrier area. It is not a result of sand winning but erosion from upstream.”

“There are gutters but not enough and we are now constructing a storm drain at Baba Dogo to contain the water, and it will lead the water to the Sunda Factory area and around the Old Melcom, we are also working on another drain to help with the situation,” the municipal engineer added.

Following a downpour around 4 pm on Monday, May 13, commuters found themselves stranded as vehicular traffic persisted into Tuesday morning.

Residents were compelled to wade through the floodwaters to access their homes.

The traffic congestion occurred due to both sides of the road being blocked by silt washed onto the road by the rain. Additionally, the situation was worsened by several vehicles breaking down along the stretch.
