A military officer lost his life, while two others narrowly escaped death on Tuesday, April 30th, during a land dispute at Millennium City, a community in Kasoa, Central Region.
The incident unfolded as the deceased and his companions confronted individuals allegedly encroaching on land they claim ownership of.
Efforts to resolve the dispute at the Millennium City District Police Command were unsuccessful, leading to a tragic escalation.
According to Winnebo Ndego, who allegedly facilitated the land transaction, the military officers had acquired the land but encountered resistance from a group led by an individual named Fiifi whenever they tried to develop it. Despite prior reports to the police, the conflict remained unresolved.
Upon encountering the occupants on the disputed land, the military officers urged them to halt their activities and join them in seeking mediation at the police station. Despite these efforts, the disagreement persisted, prompting the officers to revisit the police station to pursue their initial complaint.
Subsequently, they were notified by an officer on duty that their case had been referred to the Central East Regional Police Command.
While en route to the Regional Police Command, they purportedly received orders from Benlord Ababio, also known as Nana Ben, who is claimed to be a sub-chief, to desist from pursuing the case.
Allegedly, when they resisted, he opened fire on their vehicle, a private Toyota RAV4 car with registration number GR 3591-24, resulting in the immediate death of one of the soldiers.
Kofi Asmah, purported owner of the construction company engaged in the land transaction, expressed apprehensions regarding potential collusion between certain police officers and land guards. His concerns hint at a broader issue of corruption within local law enforcement agencies.
