Minority demands dismissal of Communications Minister over DStv impasse

The call follows the impasse between DStv and the Minister over the pricing of DStv subscription.

The Minister had demanded a 30 percent reduction in DStv subscription fees but later announced an upgrade in value for various DStv packages after an amicable meeting with MultiChoice Ghana.

Addressing the press on Thursday, October 2, 2025, Deputy Ranking on the Communications and Information Committee, Charles Asuako Owuredu said “by adopting an arbitrary decision-making posture, the Minister is also denying regulators such as the NCA the opportunity to perform their work according to law which clearly threatens the growth of this sensitive industry.

“His actions also signal a breach of the President’s code of conduct that requires candor and respect for all persons,” he stated.

The caucus argued that the posture of the Minister is a “display of ineptitude, incompetence and penchant for deceit.”

They, therefore demand that;

  1. the Minister renders an unqualified apology to Ghanaians for the waste of the nation’s time and resources for this venture.
  2. We call on him to account for the fines levied on DStv.
  3. We deem him unfit to continue as the Minister for this strategic ministry of communication, digital technology and innovation and therefore, call on him to resign or for the President to fire him.

The Minority contends that the Minister completely shifted from his initial bold promise of a 30% reduction in subscription fees, only to later claim that MultiChoice’s ongoing promotional campaign was a “generational success.”

According to them, this move represents a betrayal of public trust and a failure to deliver on his own stated objectives.

Instead of addressing legitimate questions posed by Ghanaians—such as why he prioritised MultiChoice’s PR efforts over his price-reduction agenda, or how much revenue has been accrued from fines imposed on MultiChoice—the Minister resorted to attacking the Minority Committee and well-meaning citizens,” Owiredu added.

Meanwhile, MultiChoice Ghana on Wednesday, October 1 provided clarity on the new value-enhancement DStv packages announced by the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) published on MultiChoice’s website indicated that the value-added packages announced were only promotion offers to be valid for only three months.

In a statement MultiChoice said “we fully support the joint media statement that was issued by the Honourable Minister, Samuel Nartey George and implementation of same has already commenced.”

MultiChoice added that the joint committee will reconvene in three (3) months to evaluate the impact of the new packages, an exercise which will be periodic.

“There is no restriction on a subscriber’s choice of a bouquet. This offer is available to both existing, returning and new customers from 1st October 2025,” the statement added.

MultiChoice further apologized for any inconvenience and contradiction its FAQs may have caused.
