By New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku, also known as OPK, has denied allegations that the government is unlawfully recruiting New Patriotic Party (NPP) sympathizers into the security services.
Mr. Ansah Opoku criticized the Minority in Parliament for their accusations, calling them mischievous and urging the public to disregard these claims.
The Minority in Parliament has accused the government of an alleged scheme in which each NPP Parliamentary Candidate purportedly received 30 slots for enlistment into various security branches. They perceive this move as an attempt to influence the outcomes of the upcoming 2024 general elections.
During a press conference, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader, expressed concerns about the potential repercussions if these recruits, referred to as “NPP thugs in uniform,” engage in unauthorized actions.
In an interview with JoyNews on Monday, Ansah Opoku responded to these allegations, dismissing the Minority’s claims as baseless.
Mr. Ansah Opoku argued that the Minority Leader should have directly addressed these concerns with President Akufo-Addo during their meeting on Monday.
He reiterated that the government is not involved in any such recruitment activities and emphasized the importance of focusing on factual information rather than unfounded accusations.
“I have not been given 30 slots. I am a very active member of my caucus and if such opportunities are available, I am sure I will be told. So I have not been given any slot as a Member of Parliament and I saying it on authority and I am surprised that this allegation is coming from Ato Forson, the Minority Leader.”
“He had a very privileged opportunity to meet with the President and if I were him, I would be very bold and ask him about it but if he could not do that and he came publicly to make this wild allegation, I think it is very unfortunate.”
