A founding member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed dissatisfaction with the Electoral Commission’s (EC) conduct.
Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe warned that certain actions by the Commission could jeopardize Ghana’s democratic integrity.
He made these remarks at an anti-corruption event held at the GNAT Hall in Accra on Monday, September 2.
“I am saying at the moment, the greatest threat to have democracy is the Electoral Commission, that is the greatest threat to our democracy, and if we are not careful, they will lead this country into destruction, mark my words,” he said.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe warned that the EC’s conduct represents a serious threat to the nation’s stability.
He further warned, “I’ve seen coup d’etat in this country, I have been part of coup d’etat in this country, and I know what I’m talking about. I spent almost five years of my life in prison,” he stated, emphasising the gravity of the situation.
Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe’s concerns arise from recent developments he believes have been mishandled by the EC.
He highlighted specific issues, such as alleged unauthorized transfers of voters between constituencies, which he contends were carried out without proper consent and could potentially disrupt the electoral process.
“How on earth can transfers be made from one particular constituency to another without the consent of others? These are facts,” he quizzed.
This comes as the EC faces heightened scrutiny from stakeholders, including the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.
