Premier League: Liverpool’s hopes for the title are nearly extinguished following their draw with West Ham

Liverpool’s hopes for the Premier League title appear all but dashed after Michail Antonio salvaged a point for West Ham at London Stadium.

Jarrod Bowen broke the deadlock just before halftime, rising highest to meet Mohammed Kudus’ cross into the area, while Liverpool failed to show much improvement following their Merseyside derby loss earlier in the week.

However, the visitors staged a second-half resurgence, with Andy Robertson equalizing from Luis Diaz’s low pass into the penalty area.

Their persistence paid off as Cody Gakpo’s shot from a corner deflected off Angelo Ogbonna, Tomas Soucek, and Alphonse Areola before finding the net.

It seemed Liverpool was on the path to recovery from consecutive league defeats until Antonio’s powerful header leveled the score for the Hammers.

Liverpool currently occupies the third position in the table with three games left to play, trailing leaders Arsenal by two points. Arsenal is set to face Tottenham on Sunday, while Manchester City holds the second spot with two games in hand.

With Liverpool’s title aspirations fading, their chances now hinge on both of their title rivals experiencing setbacks to rekindle their hopes of contending for the championship.

With Dutchman Arne Slot poised to replace Jurgen Klopp this summer after Liverpool agreed a £9.4m compensation deal with his current club Feyenoord, Klopp suggested his successor would be helped by the Reds’ season “not finishing on a high”.

After clinching the Carabao Cup in February, Liverpool seemed poised to challenge for a European trophy and make a strong bid for the Premier League title in Klopp’s final season.
