The healthy rivalry between the two oldest, most popular and best senior high schools in Ghana will be rekindled at the Achimota Golf Club on July 1, 2025.
The old students of the nation’s most glamorous educational institutions, Mfantsipim School and Adisadel College will compete in a special golf tournament to decide who is the best on the course.
The two schools have often and still challenge or debate on who is the best in everything.
It was an exciting moment at the Bok Nam Kim Golf Club at the Ghana Air Force Base last Thursday when the 2025 edition of the Jonah Cup was unveiled on a night which was characterised with camicadrie, back patting, and friendly banter. A minute silence was observed for departed souls.
The tournament which started in 2015 in honor of Dr. Sam Jonah, the chief patron has become big and now corporate organisations are getting involved to support and contribute with awards for the outstanding players.
Dr. Kwaku Appietu-Ankrah, Captain of the SANTA family, the defending champions who majestically brought the trophy said “if our opponents do not touch the cup tonight, they should forget it, you know it will be fun and trust Adisco when it comes to sports, it’s all about fun to keep the two schools in the limelight”
Adisadel College Old Boys who love to be called the Santaclusians have lifted the magnificent cup four times while the Kwabotwe lads as Mfantsipim students are known have won three times.
There were some years that the event could not come on due to circumstances beyond the control of organisers like the Corona Virus spread period.
Santaclusians, the alumni of Adisadel College, will feature players like President David Atuwo, Capt (rtd) Prince Kofi Amoabeng, Okoe Allotey and other top golfers.
According to Dr. Ernest Asimemu ,Captain of MOBA Golf, they are well prepared and ready to snatch the trophy. He urged MOBA and golf fans to be at Achimota to witness another great event.
“Watch the space we are coming to be at par with them” he stressed
Mr. Mike Aggrey, a MOBA and former President of Ghana Golf Association who will play alongside Martin Osei and President Eddie Nustugah added that since it was established about a decade ago, the Jonah Cup has been competed for on seven occasions with the Santaclausians bagging four of them while the Botwe boys have managed three.
“MOBA is determined to achieve the tie breaker in order to retain the bragging rights which we famously attained in the first and second encounters” he expressed.
Mr. Aggrey who is the current Secretary General of the African Golf Confederation said there are many merits in playing golf such as networking aside the health benefits.
Mfantsipim Old Boys Association (MOBA) is an association that brings together all “Old Boys” of Mfantsipim and creates for them a platform that promotes their common interests and bring development and progress to Mfantsipim and quality second cycle education in Ghana; and at the same time provide for other related matters connected with the wellbeing of members, their associates and Mfantsipim.
Corporate organisations such as, Samsung, Vodafone (now Telesel) Stanbic bank and many others are supporting the event.
