Tanker Drivers’ Strike: Risk of Transportation Delays for 400 Million Litres of Fuel

The ongoing sit-down strike by the Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union poses a risk of over 400 million liters of fuel not being transported from various petroleum loading terminals nationwide.

This situation is anticipated to affect approximately 3.5 million consumers across the country in the coming days.

The grievances of the tanker drivers stem from November 2023, following the submission of a policy framework outlining the conditions of service for its members to the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) for review and approval.

The framework, formulated by a 21-member committee, is still pending approval by the NPA Board.

However, it has come to light that in response to the policy framework, the Board instructed the committee to make amendments without specifying the exact changes required.

Despite multiple requests by the committee for clarity on the required amendments, no specific instructions were provided.

Frustrated by the lack of communication, the committee submitted a petition to the Presidency and is awaiting a response.

The aggrieved tanker drivers stress the urgency of implementing the policy framework to facilitate smoother operations and improve their welfare.
