Three illegal miners have been remanded by the Koforidua Circuit Court B

The Koforidua Circuit Court B has remanded three individuals into police custody following their arrest for illegal mining activities in the Birim River, between Akwabuoso and Akrofufu in the Atewa West District of the Eastern Region.

Gideon Gabor, aged 32, Agyemang Meshach, aged 24, and Boampong Livingston, aged 43, were charged with conspiracy to commit illegal mining and mining without a license on Thursday, October 16.

The trio was apprehended while actively involved in illegal mining operations, commonly known as galamsey, during a special operation conducted by the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners task force to curb illegal mining activities in water bodies.

They did not enter a plea at the court session presided over by Her Honour Matilda Ribeiro.

In court, the suspects refuted the charges read to them, claiming the prosecution’s account was false. They explained they were arrested upon returning from an errand and requested bail, promising to cooperate fully with the court.

The prosecution informed the court that police investigations were nearing completion and requested an adjournment.

The presiding judge granted the adjournment and instructed the prosecution to conclude their investigations before the next court date scheduled for November 4, 2024.
