“To prevent the spread of Hepatitis B, avoid sharing soupy foods from one bowl in group settings,” advised Prof. Akosa

Renowned cellular pathologist and lifestyle wellness consultant, Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, has cautioned that communal eating from one bowl can contribute to the spread of Hepatitis B.

He explained that consuming soupy foods like fufu, omo tuo, or tuo zaafi together from one bowl can lead to the inadvertent sharing of saliva among individuals.

This occurs when people put their hands in their mouths and then dip them into the soup. Such behavior can result in the mixing of saliva with the soup, potentially leading to the spread of Hepatitis B if an individual is infected.

Prof. Akosa led a discussion on practical ideas aimed at enhancing health quality in Ghana at the Ghana Shippers Authority Hall in Ridge, Accra, on Tuesday.

The former Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) shared insights on healthy foods and lifestyles as preventive measures against diseases.

“Once upon a time, we were all there, there was group participation, group eating, group everything…

“And even the eating, it was later on that I [Prof Akosa] realised that, this is how we spread Hepatitis B. We didn’t know that. We are all eating fufu by the time you finish, you are drinking saliva.”

“I mean five, six of you, you are doing omo tuo or you are doing fufu, what do you think you are doing, you are going in like that and then you come in, by the time you are ending you are drinking saliva, it is the easiest way to spread hepatitis B, he said.

During the discussion on practical strategies to enhance healthcare quality in Ghana, Prof. Agyeman Badu Akosa was joined by Prof. Aaron Abuosi, a health policy and management expert, as they shared their insights and thoughts.

The two prominent professionals were the main speakers on “Quality Health for All” at the latest edition of the Graphic National Dialogue Series.

The event, conceptualized and organized by the Graphic Communications Group Ltd, serves as a platform for discussing development issues with an emphasis on fostering national consensus in a non-partisan setting.
