Unknown Individuals Vandalize ECG Transformer in Asutuare

Unknown individuals have vandalized and stolen components from a 100KVA, 33/0.433KV transformer located at Asutuare Junction, owned by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Tema Region.

The transformer, valued at approximately GH₵75,000, was found to have been damaged on Saturday, August 31, 2024, during a routine patrol to address a power outage.

Michael Buabin, the Tema Regional ECG Engineer, informed the Ghana News Agency that the transformer had been dismantled, with several parts removed and stolen. Other components were found scattered around the site.

Mr. Buabin reported that ECG officials who discovered the vandalism had filed a report with the Doryumu Police Station.

He noted that the damage had caused significant inconvenience to customers, with some experiencing power outages as a result.

Additionally, he explained that such incidents impact ECG’s operations by diverting resources intended for other projects to replace the stolen transformer.

“The damaged transformer itself would cost about GH75,000, while the associated components needed will likely raise the cost to over GH100,000, an amount that could have gone into other developmental projects by the organisation,” he said.

The regional engineer urged the public to assist ECG by reporting anyone seen damaging or attempting to sell stolen items. He emphasized that public collaboration is crucial in preventing such incidents in the future.
