Unlock the Secrets of Jamestown: Accra’s Best-Kept Historic Treasures

History

Today, both Jamestown and Usshertown remain fishing communities primarily inhabited by the Ga people. Although they are in a state of decay, these districts hold significant historical value, as Accra replaced Cape Coast as the capital of the Gold Coast (British colony) in 1876. The original lighthouse at James Fort, built in 1871, was replaced in the 1930s by the current tower, which stands 28 m (92 ft) tall and has a visibility range of 16 nautical miles (30 km). It overlooks the harbour, James Fort, the Bukom district, and Ussher Fort.

Since World War II, various plans to enhance the capital have emerged, with some considering improvements in Jamestown essential, while others view them as competing with the development of Accra’s central business district further north. Currently, redevelopment plans for Jamestown and Usshertown, referred to as “Ga-Mashie,” are underway following the 2015 Old Accra Strategy. The popular Azonto dance originated in Jamestown, where the local language, Ga, is commonly spoken.

Areas within Jamestown and Usshertown include Bukom, known for its boxing gyms; Adedainkpo, once home to the wealthiest African residents of Accra; Swalaba; Korle Woko (formerly Ripponville); and Akoto Lante.

Jamestown also hosts the annual Chale Wote Street Art Festival, highlighting its vibrant cultural scene.

Before

Located directly east of the Korle Lagoon, Jamestown and Usshertown are the oldest districts of Accra, Ghana, emerging as communities around the 17th century British James Fort and Dutch Ussher Fort on the Gulf of Guinea coast. Developed in the late 19th century, these areas experienced rapid growth during the 20th century, resulting in a dense mixture of commercial and residential use.
