The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) disclosed that it commenced investigating the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat in July of the preceding year.
This institution is among those under active investigation for allegations of corruption and related misconduct, as stated by the OSP.
“The Office of the Special Prosecutor commenced investigations into suspected corruption and corruption-related offences at the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat circa July 2023. The investigation is active and ongoing,” the OSP said.
These comments were contained in a press statement addressing a complaint titled “Report of Suspected Corruption and Corruption-Related Offences in the award of Scholarships by the Registrar of Ghana Scholarship Secretariat- Kingsley Oppong Agyeman.”
The Scholarship Secretariat has garnered attention in recent days due to an investigative report by Fourth Estate, which uncovered instances of scholarships being awarded to individuals from affluent backgrounds.
These individuals include daughters of Ghanaian lawyer and politician Freddie Blay and former Inspector General of Police. This goes against its mandate of offering scholarships to needy but brilliant students.
The investigations also showed that “powerful” individuals are sometimes offered double scholarships.
