Former Environment Minister Dr Kwaku Afriyie has told Parliament the Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Authority Henry Kwabena Kokofu is working assiduously to secure World Bank funds for the Akosombo Dam spillage victims. Members of Parliament representing the affected constituencies have expressed their dissatisfaction with the government’s inaction. Many victims are still residing in temporary shelters, awaiting government intervention for resettlement and compensation.
Addressing the Parliament, the former Minister stated that Henry Kwabena Kokofu will imminently submit Ghana’s documentation to secure funding.
“As I speak to you now, the Akosombo Spillage for example, we believe that we can qualify under loss and damage and the EPA under Executive Director Kokofu is working hard so that we can deposit our papers, the status of the loss and damage with the World Bank and all the rules and regulations that will lead to the disbursement is now being discussed. We believe that we can qualify”, he said.
Parliament is currently considering the Environmental Protect Bill which will address environmental challenges and give the Environmental Protection Authority more powers to deal with emerging environmental issues.
