The odds favour Bawumia to be elected flagbearer again but he can’t win the 2028 general elections – NDC’s Dela Coffie

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Dela Coffie, has projected that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will win the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer primaries.

However, he said, the NPP will struggle in the 2028 general elections with him as the presidential candidate.

The NPP will be going to the polls on Saturday January 31 to elect theor flagbearer. Dr Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Kwabena Ague Agyepong, Dr Bryan Acheampong and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum are all contesting to be elected.

Ahead of the polls, Dela Coffie in a post on his Facebook said “you don’t need to be clairvoyant to see the Bawumia victory on Saturday. In fact, the odds are heavily stacked in his favour to be re-elected as the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party(NPP).

“In normal times that ought to be a welcome news for the NPP but we’re not in normal times and most NPP partisans don’t seem to realise this. Surely, apart from anything else, Bawumia 2028 won’t end in renewal for the NPP, but chaos and complete paralysis.

He further stated that Dr Bawumia failsed to manage the economy well during the Akufo-Addo administration.

“We are talking about Dr Bawumia, the man who flunked economics and public finance in equal measure in the 8 damning years of the NPP, now presenting himself as Ghana’s great alternative – His record as a ‘celebrated economist’ and the kingpin of the Akufo-Addo’s Economic Management Team was a masterclass in buck-passing and managerial incompetence.

“At this juncture, the NPP has to ask itself what is to be gained by retaining a man who was part of the cabinet that presided over the worst government of all time, and whose chances of rising to the occasion in 2028 seem slim?

“The reality is that no amount of rebranding can take away from the fact that tootling along happily as a canvasser against every economic theory under the sun, and engaging in exchange rate politics is not the same as having the actual skill sets to get the job done. So yes, the NPP’s vowed intention to return Dr Bawumia on the 2028 ticket appears to be politicaly correct, however the scrutiny on his track record has barely begun – And it can only get intense after 31st January. I wish the NPP well,” he said.
