A group of New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency executives across Ghana has urged party delegates to look beyond personalities and vote for a candidate they believe can return the party to power in the 2028 general elections.
Ghana travel guideThe group, operating under the banner “Team Ken,” said the choice delegates make at the NPP’s presidential primary on January 31, 2026, will determine the future of the party, insisting that former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, is the most viable option to lead the NPP back to government.
Addressing the media in Kumasi, Sheik Dauda Mohammed, NPP Constituency Secretary for Kintampo North, speaking on behalf of Team Ken, stated that the party’s overriding objective is to recapture power in 2028 and form the next government in 2029.
“As a political party, our sole ambition is to recapture power in 2028,” he said. “This places a heavy responsibility on delegates to choose a flagbearer who can win the general election convincingly — one touch,” he added.
Team Ken strongly opposed giving former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia another chance to lead the party into the 2028 elections, arguing that doing so would amount to “sacrificing victory.”
According to the group, after years of presenting Dr. Bawumia as the party’s presidential candidate — both in opposition and in government — the NPP suffered a defeat of over 1.7 million votes in the 2024 general elections. They contend that expecting a different outcome in 2028 under the same candidate would be unrealistic.
They further referenced the party’s losses in Zongo communities and the northern regions, noting that earlier assurances that Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy would secure those voting blocs did not materialise.
“Selecting a flagbearer from regions where the party lacks electoral strength is politically suicidal and strategically unwise,” the group asserted.
The group highlighted Ken Agyapong’s long-standing commitment to the NPP, describing him as a loyal party financier and grassroots supporter who has consistently invested resources into party activities.
They cited his contributions, including the provision of vehicles, party paraphernalia, financial assistance to parliamentary candidates, and support for party structures nationwide. They also noted his active participation in the 2024 campaign, touring the country with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the then running mate to Dr. Bawumia.
Team Ken described Ken Agyapong as the only aspirant among the five contenders with genuine grassroots appeal, maintaining strong relationships with polling station executives and ordinary party members.
They credited him with supporting party faithful through payment of medical bills, school fees, festive food distribution, and facilitating employment opportunities for polling station executives.
The group also presented him as a successful industrialist capable of reshaping the NPP’s campaign message ahead of 2028. They pointed to his investments in cassava starch processing, fruit and steel manufacturing, plastics production, and a large cold storage facility, which they claim have created over 7,000 jobs.
According to them, previous campaign messages centred on digitisation, exchange rate stability, and macroeconomic management failed to resonate with voters in 2024. Instead, they believe a message built around jobs, skills training, factories, and industrialisation will offer the party a fresh appeal.
Team Ken further described Ken Agyapong as outspoken against corruption, stressing that his criticism has spared no one, including members of his own party. They portrayed him as honest, transparent, and incorruptible.
They also referenced his philanthropic projects, including support for the Cardiothoracic Centre at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and a power plant at Tamale Teaching Hospital. The group said a Kennedy Agyapong-led NPP would focus on internal unity and party discipline, warning that the outcome of the January 31 primary will determine whether the party recovers or declines further.
“The outcome of the January 31, 2026, election will determine whether the party remains on a sick bed or is discharged,” Sheik Dauda warned.
Members of the group concluded with a direct appeal to delegates to vote for Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, describing him as “the voice of the voiceless, the hope of the hopeless, and the redeemer of the vulnerable and the poor.”
“We can no longer waver. The NPP must win power in 2028 — and the man to lead us there is Kennedy Ohene Agyapong,” the group declared.
