The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Ghana are exploring new areas of cooperation to strengthen bilateral relations and promote practical development partnerships.
The proposed areas of collaboration include education, investment, urban development, cultural exchange and people-to-people relations.
The discussions took place on Monday, September 7, 2026, when the Russian Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Andrei Ordash, paid a courtesy call on the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey.
The meeting focused on potential areas of collaboration between Accra and cities in Russia, with both sides exploring opportunities for knowledge exchange, institutional development and economic cooperation.
Mayor Allotey said Accra could draw valuable lessons from the development experiences of Russian cities, particularly in urban planning, infrastructure development, technology and metropolitan management.
He expressed optimism that Accra could adopt relevant best practices from Russian cities while also sharing its own experiences in local governance and urban management.
Mayor Allotey identified Moscow as a city from which Accra could draw valuable lessons, particularly in addressing the challenges of rapid urbanisation, infrastructure development and metropolitan growth.
He subsequently proposed establishing city-to-city partnerships between Accra and selected cities in Russia.
According to him, the partnerships would create opportunities for knowledge sharing, institutional cooperation and joint development initiatives.
The proposed collaboration is expected to facilitate technical exchanges and joint initiatives in areas of mutual interest, while strengthening institutional and community ties between Ghana and Russia.
The engagement forms part of the AMA’s efforts to expand international partnerships that can support Accra’s development and improve service delivery to residents.
Both sides expressed a commitment to continuing the discussions and identifying practical areas of cooperation that can deliver tangible benefits to Accra and its residents.
