Ten people, including four officers of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), are in custody as investigations intensify into suspected drug trafficking through Ghana’s ports.
President John Dramani Mahama was briefed on the case during an urgent meeting with security chiefs on Thursday. The meeting focused on ongoing investigations into the movement of illicit drugs through the country’s ports.
A statement issued on Thursday, September 17, by Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said ten people, including four officers of the Customs Division of the GRA, are in custody as investigations continue.
The Presidency has not disclosed the identities of those being held or provided details of the allegations against them. It is also unclear whether any charges have been filed, as investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
The detention of four Customs officers is one of the key developments in the ongoing investigation. However, the statement did not disclose any specific allegations against the officers or establish wrongdoing on their part.
The meeting also assessed existing security structures and measures designed to prevent drug trafficking through the country’s ports, while considering additional steps to tighten controls.
President Mahama has directed the establishment of an inter-agency task force to draw up a comprehensive roadmap to prevent drug trafficking through Ghana’s borders.
The task force is expected to submit its recommendations within two weeks, based on key outcomes and decisions from Thursday’s meeting.
