President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to transform the reclaimed Agbogbloshie landfill site in Accra into an industrial hub, with a textile factory among the projects expected to create jobs for young people.
He said the redevelopment is part of a broader government plan to convert reclaimed landfill sites across the country into productive economic centres, rather than leaving the spaces unused after waste has been cleared.
President John Dramani Mahama announced the plans on Friday, September 18, 2026, during the commissioning of the National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise at the Agbogbloshie landfill.
He said the reclaimed sites would be repurposed for industrial development and job creation, particularly for the country’s growing youth population.
At Agbogbloshie, the proposed textile factory is expected to form part of the site’s planned industrial redevelopment.
The 90-day waste evacuation exercise is expected to remove about one million tonnes of accumulated waste from the Agbogbloshie site, with the waste to be transported to the Adepa Waste Centre at Nsawam for disposal.
