Aide dismisses calls for NAPO’s removal as “groundless” and “uninformed,” rebuking the IES boss for what they perceive as a lack of understanding of the situation

Kofi Abrefa Afena, the spokesperson for Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has dismissed the demand from Nana Amoasi VII, the Executive Director of the Institute of Energy Security (IES), for the removal of his boss amid the ongoing erratic power supply, commonly referred to as “dumsor” in Ghana.

Afena criticized the call as “misguided,” stressing that it demonstrates a lack of understanding of the situation. He refuted Amoasi’s assertion that the minister is disconnected from the reality of the power challenges.

“Dr. Prempeh is not the talk too much type but believes in results. Nana Amoasi has no idea the sleepless nights of the Minister aimed at addressing the current challenges,” Abrefa said in a statement.

Kofi Abrefa argues that the current difficulties are being addressed diligently, and he anticipates that tangible improvements will soon be evident to all.

“He [Amoasi] says the matter needs swift intervention, but I struggle to appreciate the logic in Amoasi’s position of removing the minister. When Kwabena Donkor resigned over the pervasive Dumsor under John Mahama, did it necessarily solve the matter? Amoasi should get serious. It is all about solutions.  Dr. Prempeh continues to work with the technical people to find amicable solutions,” he added.

The spokesperson for the Energy Minister reaffirmed his boss’ appeal for patience from the Ghanaian populace as stakeholders remain committed to resolving the temporary challenges.

In contrast, Nana Amoasi VII asserted that the energy sector is presently without effective leadership. Consequently, he advocated for the appointment of a new leader to tackle the ongoing issues.

Ghana has been contending with frequent power interruptions lately, prompting widespread demands from citizens for a structured timetable to manage these disruptions.

During an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday, April 22, Nana Amoasi VII voiced his discontent with the performance of the current Energy Minister. He recommended that the minister be dismissed from his duties, citing perceived inadequacy for the role.

Nana Amoasi VII criticized what he saw as the minister’s disregard for the concerns of Ghanaians, labeling it as unacceptable and intolerable.

“Today the power sector or the energy sector appears shepherdless. You don’t see a leader who is standing up to the issues, accepting them as they are and seeking to address them while calling for cooperation from Ghanaians.

“We have been asking for a timetable for quite a long time. The PURC intervened as an arbiter between the utilities and consumers and asked the ECG to provide one unfortunately the Minister of Energy [tells] all of us including the PURC to produce a timetable if we need one and why we wish the country evil by asking for a load shedding timetable.”
