In Mogadishu, Somalia, authorities have implemented a ban on face masks, citing security concerns. Salah Dheere, the spokesperson for the Mogadishu administration, expressed that criminals have been exploiting face masks to conceal their identities and engage in illegal activities. Despite the widespread use of masks during the Covid-19 pandemic, this measure has been enforced to address security issues.
Additionally, authorities have extended the ban to the wearing of hats and carrying weapons in public transport. However, traditional sunnah hats worn by elders are exempt from this prohibition. The decision was reached during a recent security meeting chaired by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
Somalia has faced persistent insecurity, primarily attributed to threats from the al-Shabab militant group. The al-Qaeda-affiliated organization has intensified attacks, demonstrating a resurgence since President Mohamud’s government launched an offensive against the group in August 2022.
