TraffiTech one of Ghana’s best policies – Dr Mireku

International Relations expert Dr Nana Yaw Mireku has described Ghana’s electronic traffic enforcement system, TraffiTech, as one of the most impactful policies introduced by the government, citing its potential to save lives and improve road safety.

He said policies that directly improve people’s lives and address critical societal needs are more significant in defining a government’s legacy than infrastructure development alone.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, November 7, Dr Mireku said successive governments undertake infrastructure projects, but practical policies that improve public welfare are what distinguish effective governance.

He singled out TraffiTech’s focus on preventing road crashes and saving lives, saying its importance would be particularly clear to families who have lost loved ones through road accidents.

“What, for me, sets governments apart is instrumental policies. Because, like I said, as for infrastructure development, every government does it. But the policies you put in place that make people’s lives better are things that really cement your name in government or in governance.

“I think that this TraffiTech is one of the most beautiful policies ever implemented, especially because it speaks to the heart of saving lives” he said.

TraffiTech uses technology to support the enforcement of road traffic regulations, reducing reliance on manual policing and helping authorities identify motorists who violate traffic laws.

The system was piloted from May to October ahead of its full rollout on November 1. An additional month of public education was provided following appeals for more time to familiarise motorists with the initiative.
