KMA engages Senior High Schools on national sanitation day exercise

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has intensified efforts to promote environmental cleanliness by involving Senior High Schools in its monthly sanitation exercise, observed nationwide as National Sanitation Day.

The exercise, which takes place on the first Saturday of every month, forms part of a broader strategy by the assembly to promote proper sanitation practices and foster a culture of environmental responsibility among residents of the Kumasi metropolis.

Speaking to Citi News, KMA Metro Environmental Health Officer, Kwaku Poku, said the decision to engage senior high school students is aimed at sensitising young people on the importance of maintaining a clean environment while instilling in them a sense of civic duty at an early age.

“We need to imbibe in them the responsibility of keeping our environment clean. This is a way to help students understand that there are sanitation challenges in our cities and that addressing them requires a collective effort. They are our future leaders, so when we organise such clean-ups, it is important for us to involve them and nurture a sense of civic responsibility,” he said

He further expressed concern over the low public turnout during the cleanup exercise, describing the level of participation as discouraging.

“The participation of the general public has not been very encouraging. Considering the amount of work that needs to be done, we often require extra hands. This is an important exercise that we must all be involved in”he added
