More than 700 residents in Hohoe in the Volta Region are currently seeking shelter in classrooms after flooding damaged or destroyed their homes, according to the area’s Member of Parliament, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpor.
Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, September 29, Mr Tsekpor said mud houses were among the properties hardest hit by the floods.
He added that several residents had also lost personal belongings and other valuables to the floodwaters.
“With the figures we have currently, we have over seven hundred as of yesterday [Monday] living in classrooms,” he said.
The MP called for urgent assistance for the displaced residents, many of whom are currently using classrooms as temporary shelters.
“We want support immediately because our people are in a dire situation,” the MP said.
Overall, more than 3,000 residents have been displaced by the flooding, while over 400 homes have reportedly been affected after the River Dayi overflowed its banks.
