Petroleum tanker drivers have commenced a sit-down strike today in protest against the deteriorating condition of the 7.2-kilometre Valco Roundabout–Kpone Junction road in Tema.
The drivers say the badly damaged road poses significant safety risks, particularly as they transport highly flammable petroleum products.
Speaking to Citi News, the National Chairman of the union, George Nyawunu, said the industrial action became necessary because the road has become increasingly hazardous for motorists.
Nyawunu acknowledged that a contractor is working on the road but said the pace of the rehabilitation has been unacceptably slow.
He noted that the deteriorating road is disrupting tanker operations and increasing the dangers associated with transporting petroleum products through the Tema enclave, which is home to several fuel and LPG storage depots.
“Given the high concentration of volatile materials in the area, stakeholders caution that the entire Tema township and its surrounding communities are effectively sitting on a potential time bomb if the infrastructure is not urgently addressed”, he said.
