Two people are feared dead following a fire that swept through the North Industrial Area branch of Duraplast Ghana in Accra in the early hours of Thursday, October 1, 2026.
Among those feared dead is reportedly a two-week-old baby, although the identities of the victims and the circumstances surrounding their deaths had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting.
The fire is suspected to have been triggered by an exploding gas cylinder, according to an eyewitness.
The incident occurred within the industrial enclave, where thick smoke and flames were seen emerging from the affected area, causing concern among workers, residents and others in the vicinity.
An eyewitness who identified himself as Mohammed said a woman had been cooking for her children before leaving the gas cylinder in the care of one of them.
He alleged that the child subsequently increased the gas, causing the cylinder to explode and triggering the fire.
“Some woman was cooking for her children and she went out and one of the children increased it and then the cylinder exploded,” he said.
The fire reportedly spread rapidly as thick smoke engulfed the surrounding area.
The exact cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the reported deaths have yet to be officially established.
Authorities are expected to investigate the incident to determine what caused the fire and establish the full extent of the casualties.
