The Ghana Armed Forces has handed over 175.6 kilometres of cleared right-of-way to the government, clearing the way for construction of the much-anticipated Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
The handover was completed on Monday, September 14, 2026, following the GAF’s clearance of 175.6 kilometres of the project corridor.
The exercise was carried out by the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces and completed in 19 weeks, a week ahead of the 20-week schedule.
President John Dramani Mahama, who received the cleared corridor on behalf of the government, commended the Armed Forces for delivering what he described as a critical assignment towards the project’s implementation.
“In 20 weeks, I’m pleased to announce to the whole country of Ghana that our armed forces have accomplished this mission. One week ahead of schedule, they did it in 19 weeks,” President Mahama said.
He said the cleared corridor runs from Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region to Sewua in the Ashanti Region, cutting through forested areas and crossing several rivers and streams along the route.
“From Ablekuma in Greater Accra to Sewua in the Ashanti Region, within 19 weeks, 175.6 kilometres of road passing through virgin forests, crossing rivers and streams, our Ghana Armed Forces can today announce to all of us, as they say in military jargon, mission accomplished,” he said.
President Mahama said the handover marks an important step towards the construction of the 198.7-kilometre Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
The planned six-lane expressway will connect Accra and Kumasi along a new alignment, separate from the existing Accra-Kumasi highway.
He also disclosed that an initial $2 billion has been secured to kick-start the project, assuring contractors that funding would be available to support the construction works.
The handover of the cleared right-of-way clears the way for the next phase of the proposed expressway, which the government considers a major transport link between Accra and Kumasi.
